League Rules

Sports Sampler Platter

Sports Sampler Platter leagues are unique because different sports are played every week. Each sport has its own set of rules, most of which are laid out in the league rules for those specific sports. Some examples of typical sports played in our Sports Sampler League which have standard rules that can be reviewed on our rules page are:

  • Basketball
  • Dodgeball
  • Flag Football
  • Floor Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Volleyball

Some of the rules for the above sports are often amended slightly to become more appropriate for our Sampler Leagues, and/or to be more appropriate for playing the sport in a different environment (ex: indoor gym instead of our outdoof field).

We also play a number of specialty sports in our Sports Sampler League which do not have set rules associated with other standard leagues. For those sports, we do have some quick rule summaries available, such as:

  • Blind Volleyball:
  • Standqard Volleyball rules apply, with one major amendment:
  • A non-transparent sheet is placed over the Volleyball net, which prevents teams from seeing what is happening on the other teams side of the net.
  • Dodgeball Mix-up:
  • Slight variations of the traditional game will be played, and some examples are as follows:
  • "Original/Standard game" - No amendments
  • "Five Ball" - One extra ball will be put into play at the beginning of the game, on the middle line, and can be used similar to other dodgeballs
  • "Dead Man" - Each team will choose one player to wear a vest. If that player is hit anytime during the game, then that team will lose the game
  • “All-In” – During the last game, all players on both rosters are allowed to play at the same time. Catches eliminate an opposing player but do not bring in a previously eliminated teammate.
  • Handball/Speedball:
  • Handball (or Speedball) rules are very similar to Ultimate Frisbee, except that the equipment is a ball rather than a disc, and goals are scored by throwing the ball past a goalie (like in soccer) rather than by catching a disc in the endzone.
  • Players in possession of the ball can run only for 3 steps, and must then pass the ball to a teammate.
  • Players are only allowed to hold the ball for 5 seconds without moving when closely guarded by a defender. A dropped ball will result in loss of possession
  • Handoccer:
  • Handoccer is a very fun mash-up between Handball and Soccer
  • The basic format is that the game starts off as a typical game of soccer, and therefore the typical soccer rules are applicable.
  • The twist is that players are allowed to kick the ball up - catch it, and the game will then turn into Handball, which means the game immediately switches over to the standard Handball rules, until the ball is dropped (ether on purpose or by accident), and then the games switches back to soccer.
  • Rugby Basketball:
  • Standqard Basketball rules apply, with two major amendments: 1) A Rugby ball will be used instead of a basketball. 2) Since a Rugby ball cannot be dribbled, the player in posession of the ball can instead take 3 steps while in possession of the ball. Once they have stopped they will establish a pivot foot. Anything more than 3 steps will be considered traveling and possession will be lost.

For all of the above "specialty" sports, more detailed rules will always be fully explained on site by the game supervisor so that there is no confusion. These summaries are meant only to provide a general understandings of the rules. Typical gender-requirement rules also apply to all sports played in the Sampler league.

Playoffs in our Sports Sampler Leagues will usually follow a "mini-olympic" format, which means matchups between two teams will be a best 2/3 in 3 different sports, and the team that wins 2 of the 3 sports will win the matchup. The league will predetrmine the 3 sports that will be played, and each sport will typically be played for 20-25 minutes.
